Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD) is the name for a range of similar condition, including Asperger syndrome, that affect a person’s social interaction, communication, interests and behaviour.
It’s estimates that about 1 in every 100 people in the UK has ASD. More boys are diagnosed with the condition than girls. The exact cause of ASD is unknown, but it’s thought that several complex genetic and environmental factors are involved.
Autism is not a learning disability, but around half of people with autism may also have a learning disability, which will affect the level of support they need in their life.
